Chapter 8 and 9

"He gave her in requital of all these things, which you have taken from me. She is my happiness! She is my torture, none the less! Pearl keeps me here in life! Pearl punishes me too! See ye not she is the scarlet letter, only capable of being loved ad so endowed with a million- fold the power of retribution for my sin? Ye shall not take her! I will die first!"

This quote shows how Hester feels about her punishment. She adds her beloved Pearl on to her punishment yet contrast Pearls existance as a punishment that she loves and serves as a reminder for. By equating Pearl to the scarlett letter as well as adding the ability to love Hester relates Pearl to the sin that she committed and resulted in Pearl being created. It is made clear throughout the chapters that Hester holds anguish in her punishment she shows how attached she had become to the consequences her act brang to her by saying that she would rather die before she allowed her daughter, whom she considered the most joyful of dreary consequences to be taken away from her. Hester argues that Pearl is her constant reminder of sin and that because of that she will not falter any more in obeying God's law.

Questions
1. What is the importance of Pearl knowing but refusing to answer the question the Magistrate asked?
2. How does howthorne develop the relationship between Roger and Master Dimmesdale?
3.How does syntax affect the development of situations, relationship, or tones through out the chapter as it became increasingly long and at points periodical?

  1. Hawthorne has developed the relationship between Roger ans Dimmesdale by putting Roger in the reverends life in order for him to be healed of his illness, however their friendship grows. they have so much in common, yet they are almost complete opposites at the same time. in any case, the time they spend together causes their relationship to grow, and Roger seems to be in Mr Dimmesdale's life for another purpose as well. the syntax affects the development of the situations by making it sound like a mystery. he uses long periodic sentences in order for the reader to yearn for the answers to their questions.

  2. Hawthorne developed the relationship by explaining how Chillingworth was brought to assist Dimmesdale in his ailing health. The two gained a friendship along the way, spending endless hours together. While Chillingworth is there to assist him, he has an another motive. The more he finds out about Dimmesdale, he believes that he will figure out his secret because it will eventually radiate from within. Chillingworth seems to know that Dimmesdale is hiding something but has yet to confront him about the issue, as if he's waiting for the perfect moment.
By Pearl not adequately answering the question it illustrates the complexity of her personality. She knows the position her answer puts her in, but has the strength of her mother. It also shows that regardless even at a young age, she isn't going to conform to Puritan society.

  3. The importance of Pearl knowing but refusing to answer the question the Magistrate asked shows more of Pearl's personality- tough and rebellious, but a free-spirit.Being brought up in unusual circumstances, she isn't like the other kids and you can get a glimpse of that personality with the previous chapters, such as when she stood up to the kids that were ridiculing her and the way in which she acts when talking to Hester. You can see that she takes on some of the personality traits of her mother and is different in that she likes to take matters in her own hands, in her own way.
Hawthorne develops the relationship between Roger and Mr.Dimmesdale by first discussing the patient-doctor relationship they shared and gradually expanding upon it by developing a deeper connection between the two with the kinds of conversations they had not pertaining to Dimmesdale's health or any issues of that sort.Soon you can see a friendship growing between them, but as their relationship gets deeper Hawthorne soon adds mystery and suspense to it by discussing the thoughts of both Dimmesdale and Chillingworth to reveal other motives and secrets bottled up inside them.
